Albertsons is one of the largest Supermarkets in the United States. The company operates 2,230 stores across 37 states and employs over 250,000 people. Albertsons is a subsidiary of the Cerberus Capital Management-owned Safeway Inc.

The company was founded in 1939 by Joe Albertson in Boise, Idaho. Albertsons originally operated as a chain of grocery stores called Albertson’s Food Stores. The first store was opened on 16th and State Streets in Boise.

The company grew rapidly and by 1946, there were 23 stores in Idaho, Washington, and Oregon.

In 1964, the company expanded to California with the acquisition of Skaggs Drug Centers, Inc. By 1972, Albertsons had grown to include 53 stores in five states.

The company went public in 1973 and began trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker symbol ABS. In 1979, Albertsons acquired Lucky Stores, Inc., which made it the largest supermarket chain in the United States.

In 2015, Albertsons announced plans to merge with Safeway Inc., another large supermarket chain in the United States. The merger was completed in 2015 and Safeway became a subsidiary of Albertsons.
