The first Kohl’s store was opened in September 1962 in Brookfield, Wisconsin. The company was founded by Max Kohl, who opened a small grocery store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1927. He expanded his business by opening a series of small grocery stores called Kohl’s Food Stores.
