Is Mervyns now Kohl’s?

Mervyns, which was once one of the largest retailers in California, is now owned by Kohl’s. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2008 and was acquired by Kohl’s in 2009.

Since then, Mervyns has been slowly phased out and replaced by Kohl’s stores. As of 2019, there are no Mervyns stores left in operation.

The history of Mervyns dates back to 1949, when the company was founded by Mervin Geller. The company started out as a small chain of department stores in San Francisco.

Over the next few decades, Mervyns expanded rapidly, opening new stores across California. By the early 2000s, Mervyns had become one of the largest retailers in the state, with over 150 stores.

However, the company began to struggle in the mid-2000s. Competition from other retailers, such as Target and Walmart, began to take its toll.

In 2006, private equity firm Sun Capital Partners acquired Mervyns for $1.25 billion. Sun Capital then took the company public in 2007.

The following year, 2008, was a tough one for Mervyns. The company posted a loss of $350 million and was forced to close several stores. In October 2008, Mervyns filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Mervyns was acquired by Kohl’s in 2009 for $1 billion. Kohl’s then began to convert Mervyns stores into Kohl’s locations. As of 2019, there are no more Mervyns stores left in operation.
