What do Safeway employees wear?

Safeway is a grocery chain with more than 1,300 stores in the United States. Headquartered in Pleasanton, California, the company was founded in 1915. Safeway is a subsidiary of Albertsons.

The company’s first store was opened in American Falls, Idaho, by Marion B. Skaggs. His father, Al Skaggs, was a pioneer in the grocery business who owned a string of stores in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado.

Skaggs’ father-in-law was Robert A. McCrory, who had been running a successful chain of stores called The Piggly Wiggly.

In 1926, Marion Skaggs merged his Safeway stores with The Piggly Wiggly and took over as president of the combined company.

The new company was headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.

Safeway expanded rapidly throughout the 1920s and 1930s. By 1940, it operated more than 1,400 stores in 30 states.

During World War II, food rationing presented a challenge for Safeway and other grocery chains. To keep up with demand, Safeway built larger stores and hired more employees.

Safeway employees typically wear red or blue shirts with the Safeway logo on them. They may also wear khaki pants or skirts.
