In 2003, Big Lots was acquired by private equity firm Ares Management for $1.9 billion. In 2005, the company acquired Liquidation World and renamed it Big Lots Canada. Big Lots Canada operated 97 stores before being sold to a Canadian private equity firm in 2014.
