Safeway was founded in 1915 in American Falls, Idaho by Marion Barton Skaggs. His father, Samuel Skaggs, had founded a grocery chain called Skaggs Cash Stores. The first Safeway store was called Safeway Food Store.

Safeway is a member of the Fortune 500 and has been on the list for over 50 years. The company went public in 1930 and was acquired by Albertsons in January 2015.
