Why did Walmart sell Asda?

In 2018, Walmart announced it was selling Asda, a British supermarket chain it had owned since 1999, to Sainsbury’s, another British supermarket chain. The move was surprising to many because Walmart is typically a company that acquires businesses, not sells them. So, why did Walmart sell Asda?

There are a few possible explanations. First, Walmart may have felt that it was time to cash out on its investment in Asda.

After all, it had owned the company for nearly 20 years and it may have felt that it had gotten all it could from the deal. Second, Walmart may have wanted to focus on its core business in the United States and believed that selling Asda would allow it to do so. Finally, Walmart may have simply decided that Sainsbury’s was a better owner for Asda than it was.

Whatever the reason, Walmart’s sale of Asda to Sainsbury’s shows that even big companies can make surprising decisions. Sometimes those decisions turn out to be the right ones, and sometimes they don’t. Only time will tell if Walmart’s decision to sell Asda will ultimately be a successful one.
