Hobby Lobby was founded in 1972 by David Green, who began the business with $600 of his own money and a $600 loan from his father. The first store was opened in a 300-square-foot (28 m2) space in northwest Oklahoma City.
In 1975, the company expanded to a second location. By 1992, Hobby Lobby had fifty stores in ten states. The company went public in November of that year, trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol HOBBY.
