The company was founded in 1938 as a mail order tractor parts business. It acquired its first retail store in 1939.
The company went public in 1963 and began to expand rapidly in the 1970s. In 2005, it acquired Cenex Harvest States Cooperatives’s farm and ranch supply business, adding 126 stores to its network.
