Asda is a British supermarket chain, headquartered in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The company was founded in 1965 when the supermarket owning Asquith family merged with the Associated Dairies company of Yorkshire.
It expanded into the south of England during the 1970s and 1980s, and acquired Allied Carpets and other businesses in the late 1990s. In 1999, it was acquired by the American retail giant Walmart for £6.7 billion.
The Asda name is an acronym of its former parent company, Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Ltd, and was adopted in 1965 when that company was renamed Asquith Dairies Ltd, becoming Asda Stores Ltd in 1967.
