Did Asda buy Walmart?

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has been facing pressure in recent years from Amazon, the online shopping giant. In an effort to compete, Walmart has been on a buying spree, snapping up e-commerce companies like Jet.com and Bonobos. But one company it has not been able to buy is Asda, the British supermarket chain owned by Walmart.

Asda was founded in 1949 and was acquired by Walmart in 1999 for $10.8 billion. It is the second-largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom, with about 5 percent of the market share. But it has been struggling in recent years as Aldi and Lidl, German discount chains, have been eating into its market share.

In 2015, Walmart announced that it was selling a majority stake in Asda to two private equity firms, Carlyle Group and TPG Capital. The deal valued Asda at about $8 billion. But the deal fell apart amid concerns about antitrust regulations in the United Kingdom.

Now, it appears that Walmart is ready to give up on Asda completely. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Walmart is in talks to sell Asda to Sainsbury’s, another British supermarket chain. The deal would value Asda at about $10 billion.

The bottom line: Did Asda buy Walmart No, but Walmart did own Asda for 20 years before selling it to private equity firms in 2015. Now, it appears that Walmart is ready to sell Asda completely.
