Safeway is a grocery store chain in the United States. It is a subsidiary of Albertsons. As of February 2015, it operates 1,682 stores in the United States.
Safeway was founded in 1915 by Marion Barton Skaggs in American Falls, Idaho. Skaggs was the son of a grocer and he grew up working in his father’s store.
When Skaggs was 19 years old, his father died and Skaggs took over the family business. He expanded the business by opening new stores in neighboring towns.
In 1926, Skaggs merged his company with a competitor and the Safeway brand was born. The new company had 2,600 stores and $175 million in sales.
Safeway continued to grow in the following years. By 1930, it had 3,000 stores and $250 million in sales.
In 1940, it had 4,000 stores and $500 million in sales. In 1950, it had 5,000 stores and $1 billion in sales.
Safeway’s growth slowed down in the 1960s as other grocery store chains began to emerge. However, Safeway still managed to open several hundred new stores during this time period.
In 2015, Safeway had 1,682 stores and $32 billion in sales. The company employs approximately 140,000 people.
