Boost Mobile, Inc. is an American telecommunications company that provides wireless service and mobile broadband services in the United States.
The company is a subsidiary of Verizon Communications.
Verizon Communications acquired Boost Mobile, Inc. on November 3, 2013, for $300 million.
The acquisition was completed after a bidding war between Verizon and Sprint. The purchase was seen as a way to bolster Verizon’s prepaid mobile business, which had been struggling in the face of stiff competition from the likes of T-Mobile US and Sprint.
Shortly after the acquisition, it was reported that Boost Mobile employees would be transferred over to Verizon and that the company’s branding would be changed to Verizon Wireless. However, some Boost Mobile employees objected to the changes, and as a result, some of them formed a union.
In February 2014, it was announced that the unionization effort had failed, and that all Boost Mobile employees would be transferred over to Verizon.
Boost Mobile has not been without controversy. In February 2014, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that it was investigating the company for allegedly misleading customers about data caps and overage fees.
In October 2014, the FCC announced that it had reached a settlement with Boost Mobile, in which the company agreed to pay a $3 million fine and to change its advertising and marketing practices.
