The company was founded in Forrest City, Arkansas, by J.R. “Pitt” Hyde III and Robert M. Zimmerman. The first AutoZone store was located at 888 South Third Street in Memphis, Tennessee.
In 1999, the company became a public company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol AZO. In 2001, AutoZone purchased ALLDATA Corporation, a provider of electronic automotive repair information and software products.
