Kohl’s is an American department store chain with more than 1,100 stores in 49 states. It was founded in 1962 by Maxwell Kohl.
The company is headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee. Kohl’s operates under its own name as well as the banners Kohl’s, Kohl’s Cares, and Kohl’s Cash.
Kohl’s is the second-largest department store chain in the United States after Macy’s, and it is the fourth-largest U.S. retailer by revenue. As of February 2013, it employed more than 67,000 people.
Kohl’s has been on Fortune magazine’s list of “America’s 500 largest corporations” since 2002. In 2013, Forbes magazine ranked Kohl’s as the 35th largest retailer in the United States.
The Kohl family sold a majority stake in the company to British-American Tobacco in 1972. BATUS Inc. then sold a minority stake to Goldman Sachs and other investors in 1986, taking the company public.
BATUS Retail Group was spun off from BATUS Inc. in 1987 and changed its name to Kohl’s Corporation that same year. It added Filene’s Basement to its portfolio of brands that same year; Filene’s Basement was sold to Syms Corp in 2006.
In 1992, Kohl’s began selling off its private label credit card business to focus on building its own credit card business, which it launched nationwide in 1996 under the name “YES 2 YOU Rewards”.

In 2006, Kohl’s expanded nationwide with stores opening in Alaska and Puerto Rico.
