In January 2015, Safeway Inc. and Albertson’s LLC completed a merger of the two companies. The newly created company, Albertsons Companies, Inc., is now the second-largest grocery retailer in the United States with 2,200 stores across 35 states and Washington, D.C.
The merger was first announced in March 2014 and was completed after receiving approval from shareholders of both companies and clearance from the Federal Trade Commission.
