There are no Tesco stores in the US, but the company does operate a small chain of convenience stores under the brand name Tesco Express. These stores are located in California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada.
Tesco is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer with headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. It is the third-largest retailer in the world measured by gross revenues and ninth-largest retailer in the world measured by revenues. It has stores in 12 countries across Asia and Europe and is the market leader of groceries in the UK, Ireland, Hungary, Malaysia, and Thailand.
In August 2014, Tesco announced a partnership with Carrefour, the world’s second-largest retailer, to form a buying alliance which would enable the two companies to leverage their purchasing power to negotiate better deals from suppliers. The alliance was formed in order to compete more effectively with the world’s largest retailer, Walmart.
Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a group of market stalls. The Tesco name first appeared on products in 1924. Cohen’s business expanded rapidly, and by 1939 he had over 100 Tesco stores across the country.
The company went public on the London Stock Exchange in 1947 as Tesco Stores Limited. The first self-service store opened in St Albans in 1956 (which later became a superstore). In 1961, Tesco Leicester made an appearance as Britain’s first hypermarket.
The company acquired Homeplus in Korea in 2009 and has since developed it into one of South Korea’s leading retailers. In 2015, Tesco completed the sale of its loss-making business in Turkey to Migros Ticaret AŞ for $10 million.
In 2016,Tesco announced plans to merge with Booker Group, the UK’s largest food wholesaler, in a move that will make it Britain’s biggest food retailer with annual sales of £51 billion ($66 billion). The merger is still awaiting regulatory approval.
So while there are noTesco stores currently operatingin the US, this may changein the future as the company looks to expand its reachinto new markets.
