Does Amazon own Whole Foods?

The answer to this question is complicated, as it depends on the interpretation of the term “own.” While Amazon does have a majority stake in Whole Foods, the company does not have complete control over the grocer.

For instance, Whole Foods has its own board of directors, and it operates as a separate business entity. Therefore, Amazon could not unilaterally force Whole Foods to change its policies or procedure.

However, Amazon’s investment in Whole Foods does give the e-commerce giant increased leverage when negotiating with the grocery chain. For example, Amazon could use its financial resources to force Whole Foods to lower prices, or to accept Amazon’s deliveries and sales in its stores.

In addition, Amazon’s ownership of Whole Foods gives the company a foothold in the organic food market, which is growing rapidly.
