Mervyns was an American department store chain owned by Target. The company was founded in San Francisco, California in 1949 and operated 211 stores in 10 states across the West, South and Midwest regions of the United States. Mervyns was Targeted at middle-income shoppers and offered a wide variety of apparel and home goods.
In 2006, Target Corporation announced its plans to acquire Mervyns for $3.3 billion. The acquisition was completed in October of that year, and Mervyns became a wholly owned subsidiary of Target.
In February 2009, Target announced that it would be phasing out the Mervyns brand and closing all of its stores. The last Mervyns store closed its doors in October 2009.
While Target once owned Mervyns, the department store chain is now defunct.
