Tesco is a UK-based international grocery and general merchandise retailer. It is the third-largest retailer in the world measured by revenues and fourth-largest measured by profits. It has stores in 12 countries across Asia, Europe and North America and is the grocery market leader in the UK, Ireland, Hungary, Malaysia and Thailand.
The company was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a group of market stalls. The first Tesco store was opened in 1929 in Burnt Oak, London.
Tesco was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1947 as Tesco Stores (Holdings) Ltd. The first self-service store was opened in St Albans in 1956.
Tesco expanded rapidly throughout the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s acquiring other retailers such as The Harris Partnership, Associated Dairies and Hillards. In 1994, Tesco took over the grocery chain William Low after fighting off Sainsbury’s for control of the Dundee -based firm, which operated 57 stores at the time.
As of 2016, Tesco operates 2,318 stores across Europe.
