Albertsons Stadium is an outdoor athletic stadium in the western United States, located on the campus of Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. The stadium is the home field of the Boise State Broncos of the Mountain West Conference. It opened in 1970 as a replacement for the Bronco Stadium (formerly Bronco Gymnasium), and was originally named Boise State University Stadium. From 1997 to 1999, Albertsons, a local grocery chain, purchased the naming rights. The company chose not to renew its sponsorship in 1999, and the stadium reverted to its original name until Albertsons once again became its sponsor in 2012.
The blue turf at Albertsons Stadium was installed in 1986 and is notable as one of only two non-green playing surfaces in college football; the other is at Eastern Michigan University’s Rynearson Stadium, which features grey FieldTurf.
The unique field color has led to nicknames such as “The Blue,” “The Smurf Turf,” and “The Magic Carpet. “
Albertsons Stadium is widely known for its unusual playing surface, as well as for the bronco statue that stands atop the east end zone scoreboard. The stadium has a seating capacity of 36,387 and features two decks of grandstand seating; a press box is located on the second level of the east grandstands. The playing surface itself is 100 yards long and 53 yards wide with 20-foot-wide end zones.
