The first Big Lots store opened in Columbus, Ohio in November 1967. The company was founded by Sol Shenk, who served as its Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer until his retirement in 2003.
In 1985, the company acquired the Ohio-based discount chain Odd Lot Outlet, which added 41 stores to the Big Lots portfolio.
