Kohl’s is an American department store chain with 1,158 locations in 49 states as of February 2020. The company was founded by Max Kohl in 1927. In 1962, the company was purchased by British American Tobacco. In 1972, it became a public company traded on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1979, the company acquired the former A&P Supermarkets chain and converted them into Kohl’s Food Stores.

Kohl’s opened its first store in Wisconsin in 1962.

It opened its first store in Illinois in 1963. By 1965, Kohl’s operated 22 stores in five states. In 1968, Kohl’s expanded to Los Angeles with a store in the Puente Hills Mall.

In 1986, Kohl’s had 55 stores in 10 states. In 1992, it had 100 stores in 21 states.

Kohl’s began to sell off its A&P supermarket locations in 2000 and convert them into Kohl’s Foods stores. By 2002, all of the former A&P locations had been converted.
