Best Buy was founded in 1966 by Richard M. Schulze and Gary Smoliak. Schulze began working in the electronics retail industry in 1966 when he opened Sound of Music, an audio specialty store in St. Paul, Minnesota.
In 1983, Schulze and Smoliak purchased two struggling stores called Best Buy Company from a company called Cotter & Company. Schulze and Smoliak renamed the stores Best Buy and invested heavily in advertising and customer service.
