The company is headquartered in Essen, Germany, and as of 2018, operated over 10,000 stores in 20 countries. In Aldi’s German domestic market, the company operates as Aldi Nord (“North Aldi”) and in the United Kingdom and Ireland as Aldi Stores Ltd.
Aldi Nord is responsible for Aldi’s operations in Denmark, France, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland; while the majority of Aldi Süd’s stores are in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovenia and South Africa. Aldi US is headquartered in Batavia, Illinois. As of May 2018[update], there were 1,600 stores across 36 states. In 2017 Aldi US planned to add 400 stores by the end of 2022.
