Instacart is an online grocery delivery service with operations in the United States and Canada. On February 26, 2019, Instacart settled a class action lawsuit filed in California alleging violations of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CALRA).
The settlement will provide affected Instacart customers with a total of $18 million in cash and $12 million in product credits.
The settlement is the largest ever obtained by California consumers under CALRA. The law, which was enacted in 1970, is a comprehensive set of consumer protection statutes that cover a variety of issues, including product defects, advertising, and unfair business practices.
Under the settlement, Instacart customers who filed a valid claim by April 26, 2019 will receive a cash payment of $10 per claim, up to a total of $3,000. Customers who did not file a claim will receive product credits worth the same amount, up to a total of $3,000.
Instacart will also make a $1 million donation to the California Children’s Hospital Foundation.
This is the largest class action settlement in California history, and the largest settlement obtained by the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act. The settlement will provide relief to thousands of Californians who were victims of Instacart’s alleged violations.
