Albertsons is an American grocery chain founded in 1939. It is owned by Safeway Inc., which also owns Vons and Pavilions. Safeway was founded in 1915, and Vons in 1947.
The Albertsons chain includes 2,230 stores, of which 1,974 are in the United States and 156 are in Canada.
The company also owns and operates Acme Markets, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market supermarkets, and Randalls and Tom Thumb grocery stores. Safeway’s Canadian subsidiary Sobeys owns or operates more than 1,500 stores in Canada under a variety of banners.
In 2015, Albertsons completed the merger with Safeway. Prior to the merger, the two companies were not related. The merger created a grocery chain with 2,230 stores and 250,000 employees.
