Is Costco prime beef really prime?
It’s a fair question to ask, considering that USDA prime beef is supposed to be the highest quality beef available. And it’s not surprising that people might think that Costco, with its reputation for selling quality products at low prices, would offer USDA prime beef.
But the truth is, Costco does not sell USDA prime beef. In fact, the company has never sold USDA prime beef, and it has no plans to do so in the future.

First of all, Costco only sells fresh beef, and USDA prime beef is typically sold frozen. Second, Costco‘s business model is based on selling large quantities of meat at low prices, and USDA prime beef is simply too expensive to sell at the prices Costco customers are used to seeing.
Costco, however, does sell a high-quality grade of fresh beef called ” Kirkland Signature fresh Angus beef.” This Angus beef is graded by the USDA as “Choice,” which is one step below “Prime.”
It’s important to note that “Choice” Angus beef is still considered to be high quality – it just doesn’t quite meet the strict standards required for “Prime” designation.
So what does this all mean? Is Costco’s Kirkland Signature fresh Angus beef really prime?
No, it’s not technically prime according to the USDA standards. But it is a high-quality grade of Angus beef that is sure to please even the most discerning palate. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what really matters?
