Is Haggen owned by Safeway?

Haggen, Inc. is an American supermarket chain based in Bellingham, Washington. Founded in 1933, the company operates stores in Washington and Oregon. Haggen is a subsidiary of Albertsons.

Haggen was founded in 1933 by Ben and Dorothy Haggen in Bellingham, Washington. The couple opened their first store, the Bellingham Cash Grocery, on Bay Street.

In the early years, the Hagens focused on providing quality products and excellent customer service. The company expanded rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s, opening new stores in Washington and Oregon.

In 1971, Haggen was sold to an investment group led by Robert Goulder. Goulder expanded the company’s store base and initiated a major expansion into California in the late 1970s. However, the company encountered difficulties in the early 1980s, and Goulder was forced to sell Haggen to a group of investors led by William Dockson.

Dockson expanded Haggen’s store base in Washington and Oregon and also acquired a number of grocery chains in California, including Vons and Pavilions. In 1996, Dockson sold Haggen to Comvest Partners, an investment firm. Comvest Partners sold the company to Albertsons in 2015.

Is Haggen owned by Safeway?

No, Haggen is not currently owned by Safeway. Safeway was acquired by Albertsons in January 2015. However, prior to that acquisition, both Safeway and Haggen were owned by Comvest Partners.
