Ross Stores, Inc. is an American chain of off-price department stores headquartered in Dublin, California, operating under the brand name Ross Dress for Less. It is the second-largest off-price retailer in the United States, after TJX Companies.

Ross Stores operates 1,478 locations in 37 states, Washington, D.C., and Guam. Ross plans to open its first stores in Alaska and Hawaii in 2019.

In 1982, Mervyns California Department Stores was looking to offload some of its real estate to raise cash. Barry Dresner and Norman Levin, then working as partners at a real estate firm, approached Mervyns about the possibility of opening an off-price apparel store on some of the surplus property. Mervyns liked the idea and Dresner and Levin became the first Ross Dress for Less store managers when the first location opened in San Bruno, California in October 1982.

The new store was successful and over the next decade, Ross expanded rapidly throughout California. By 1995, there wereross 125 stores in California alone. By 1997, the company had 293 locations across 22 states.

Ross Stores is not owned by TJ Maxx. However, both companies are part of the same parent company, TJX Companies. TJX Companies is an American multinational off-price department store corporation headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts.
