Safeway is a grocery store chain in the United States. It is owned by Albertsons. Safeway has 2,200 stores in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Safeway also has a joint venture with Carrefour in Saudi Arabia.
Safeway was founded in 1915 in American Falls, Idaho, by Marion Barton Skaggs. Skaggs was the son of a grocer and had worked in the grocery business for several years before he decided to open his own store.
He started with one store, which he later sold to his brother.
In 1926, Skaggs merged his company with another grocery chain, Sam Seelig Company. The new company was called Safeway Stores Inc. The name “Safeway” was chosen because Skaggs wanted his stores to be “safe” for customers.
Safeway opened its first store in Canada in 1929. In 1947, Safeway expanded into Australia with the purchase of a chain of stores called Woolworths Limited. Safeway also operated stores in the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1987.
In 1979, Safeway was purchased by KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts). KKR is a private equity firm. In 1986, Safeway was taken public again (IPO).
In January 2015, it was announced that Safeway would be acquired by Albertsons for $9 billion.
