The company was founded in 1932 by Richard E. Hatcher Sr. and Arthur Taubman as Advance Stores. The name was later changed to Advance Auto Parts in 1957. In 2012, Advance Auto Parts acquired General Parts International, Inc. (GPI), a leading distributor of original equipment and aftermarket automotive replacement parts and related maintenance items.
