In 1929, Joe Albertson, a former Safeway district manager, opened his first grocery store in Boise, Idaho. Albertsons quickly became a success, and by 1939 it had grown to 43 stores in five Western states. During the 1950s, Albertsons expanded rapidly, and by 1965 it operated stores in nine Western states.
In 1968, Albertsons merged with Skaggs Drug Centers, Inc., a chain of drugstores founded by Sam Skaggs. The merger made Albertsons the second-largest supermarket chain in the United States.
In 2015, Albertsons was acquired by AB Acquisition LLC (ABA), a holding company jointly owned by Cerberus Capital Management and Kimco Realty Corporation. ABA is the parent company of Albertsons Companies, Inc., which owns and operates grocery stores under the Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Shaw’s, Star Market, United Express, United Supermarkets, Amigos and Carrs banners in 35 states and the District of Columbia.
