What is the difference between Ace Hardware and True Value?

There are two main types of hardware stores: big box stores and local hardware stores. Both have their pros and cons, but the type of store you choose should depend on your needs.

Here’s a closer look at the differences between Ace Hardware and True Value.

Ace Hardware

Ace Hardware is a national chain with more than 4,000 locations across the United States. Because it’s a chain, Ace is able to offer low prices on many items, including power tools, painting supplies, and lawn care equipment. However, because Ace is a big box store, it can be less convenient than a local hardware store. For example, you may have to drive further to reach an Ace Hardware store, and the selection at Ace may not be as tailored to your area as a local store’s selection would be.

True Value

True Value is a cooperative of more than 4,000 independently owned hardware stores. True Value stores are typically smaller than Ace Hardware stores, but they offer a more personalized shopping experience. The staff at True Value stores are usually more knowledgeable about the products they carry since they’re not dealing with as many customers as staff at a big box store do. However, because True Value is a cooperative, prices at True Value stores can be higher than at Ace Hardware stores.

The main difference between Ace Hardware and True Value is that Ace Hardware is a national chain while True Value is a cooperative of independently owned hardware stores.
