What is the difference between Family Dollar and Dollar General?

The two chains are very different. Dollar General is a small, independent chain with about 8,000 stores. Family Dollar is a much larger chain with more than 2,000 stores.

Family Dollar is also known for having a higher concentration of stores in rural areas. Dollar General is more focused on discount prices and has a wider variety of products.
