In January 2015, Albertsons announced it would be selling stores in five states to Supervalu. The stores were then sold to Jewel-Osco.

In March 2015, it was announced that Albertsons would be buying Safeway (which included the Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, and Carrs chains in the deal) for $9.2 billion.

The merger between Albertsons and Safeway was completed on January 30, 2015. The new company is called Albertsons Companies LLC.

In February 2016, it was announced that Albertsons would be buying the New Albertsons Inc. for $2.5 billion. New Albertsons Inc. is the parent company of Acme Markets, Shaw’s and Star Market. With this purchase, Albertsons became the second largest grocery store chain in the United States.
