Safeway is a unionized grocery store chain in the United States and Canada. In the United States, Safeway stores are unionized by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). In Canada, Safeway stores are unionized by the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW Canada).
Safeway was founded in 1915 in American Falls, Idaho. The company was acquired by MacMarr Stores in 1926 and then became a subsidiary of Skaggs United Stores in 1929. Safeway expanded across the United States during the 1930s, becoming one of the largest supermarket chains in the country.
Safeway entered Canada in 1955 with the acquisition of the Canadian assets of Dominion Stores. Safeway expanded across Canada during the 1960s and 1970s, becoming one of the largest supermarket chains in the country.
In 1981, Safeway was acquired by Dart Industries. In 1985, Dart Industries merged with Kraft Foods to form Kraft General Foods. In 1986, Kraft General Foods spun off Safeway as an independent company.
In 1995, Safeway acquired Randalls and Tom Thumb, two supermarket chains in Texas. In 1999, Safeway acquired Dominick’s, a supermarket chain in Illinois.
In 2001, Safeway merged with Vons, a supermarket chain in California. The merged company was renamed Safeway Inc.
In 2015, Safeway was acquired by Albertsons. Albertsons is a grocery store chain in the United States. Albertsons is owned by AB Acquisition LLC, a holding company controlled by Cerebrus Capital Management.

It all started back in 1915 when Safeway was first founded in American Falls, Idaho after which it went under different management until it became an independent company in 1986.
It then proceeded to expand across America through acquisitions until it reached Canada in 1955. In 2001, it merged with Vons and was renamed as Safeway Inc. before being acquired by Albertsons 15 years later.
