What was American Airlines before?

American Airlines was founded in 1927 as American Airlines Transport Corporation. The airline was founded by a group of businessmen led by Augustus K. Hand, Jr. American Airlines became an official partner of the United States Air Force in 1950 and began providing passenger and cargo service to the armed forces.

In order to support the airline’s growth, Hand created American Airlines System, which was a holding company that included American Airlines, American Eagle, and Trans World Airlines. In 1978, American Airlines became a wholly owned subsidiary of AMR Corporation. In 2013, AMR Corporation was merged with United Airlines, creating the world’s largest airline.
