What was Kohl’s called before?

Kohl’s was originally called “Kohl’s Department Store.” The company was founded in 1962 by Maxwell Kohl. The first store was located in Brookfield, Wisconsin. In 1972, the company expanded to include a second store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In 1979, the company expanded to include a third store in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1988, the company expanded to include a fourth store in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In 1992, the company changed its name to “Kohl’s Corporation” and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1996, the company acquired 42 Woolworth stores and changed its name to “Kohl’s Department Stores.”
