When did Dollar Tree acquire Family Dollar?

On November 30, 2011, Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar for $8.5 billion. At the time, the acquisition was the largest in the history of retail. Dollar Tree had been looking to purchase Family Dollar for years, and the two companies had been in talks for over a year before the deal was finalized.

The acquisition gave Dollar Tree a large presence in the discount store market, and the two companies continued to operate independently afterwards. In 2018, Dollar Tree announced that it would be closing more than 1,000 Family Dollar stores across the United States.
