Costco is a membership-only warehouse club that provides a wide selection of merchandise. It is the second largest retailer in the United States after Walmart and is the fourth largest retailer in the world with locations in the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.

Costco is headquartered in Issaquah, Washington.

Costco was founded in 1976 by James (Jim) Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman. Sinegal had worked for an independent supermarket chain called Sol Price before opening his own company.

Costco’s business model was similar to that of Price Club (now Costco Wholesale), which was founded by Sol Price and Robert Price in 1976. The first Costco warehouse opened in Seattle, Washington in 1983. Costco expanded rapidly throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

In 1993, Costco merged with Price Club, creating a new company called Price/Costco. In 1997, the name was changed back to Costco Wholesale Corporation. In 2014, Costco was ranked #14 on Fortune magazine’s list of the 500 largest companies in America.

Costco is owned by two investment firms: Fidelity Investments and The Vanguard Group. Each firm owns approximately 18% of the company.
