Kohl’s is an American department store retail chain, operated by Kohl’s Corporation. With 1,158 locations in 49 states as of February 2013, it is the largest department store chain in the United States as of February 2013. Based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, the company was founded by Polish immigrant Maxwell Kohl, who opened a corner grocery store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1927.
Brotman and his business partner, Bernard Gimbel, purchased a controlling interest in Kohl’s in 1987. The following year, they increased their stake to 50%.
In 1992, A. Alfred Taubman purchased a controlling interest in Saks Fifth Avenue and took it private. This led to a heated rivalry between Taubman and Kroger.
Kohl’s is currently owned by Vornado Realty Trust. Stanley Korshak Company holds a minority stake in the company.
