Best Buy is an American multinational consumer electronics retailer headquartered in Richfield, Minnesota. It was originally founded by Richard M. Schulze and Gary Smoliak in 1966 as an audio specialty store called Sound of Music.
In 1983, it was renamed and rebranded as Best Buy Company, Inc.
Best Buy operates under multiple divisions and subsidiaries, with Best Buy Mobile and Geek Squad being the two most prominent. As of February 3, 2018, Best Buy has operations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It also operates in China under a joint venture with Five Star.
On May 24, 2016, Best Buy announced it would acquire Geek Squad parent company Mindgeek for $450 million.
