Why did Tim Hortons close?

In the past few years, Tim Hortons has been struggling with declining sales. In May 2014, the company announced that it would be closing 500 restaurants across Canada due to falling coffee sales.

In January of this year, Tim Hortons announced that they would be closing an additional 150 restaurants. The closures come as a surprise to many, as the company had been increasing their online presence in an effort to stay afloat.

A likely reason for the closures is that Canadians have been increasingly turning to online coffee shops, such as Starbucks, for their caffeine needs. Many analysts have suggested that the closures could signal the beginning of the end for Tim Hortons as a Canadian coffee chain.
