Publix Super Markets, Inc., commonly known as Publix, is an employee-owned, American supermarket chain headquartered in Lakeland, Florida. Founded in 1930 by George W. Jenkins, Publix is a private corporation that is wholly owned by present and past employees and members of the Jenkins family.
Publix operates throughout the Southeastern United States, with locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The company also has locations in Kentucky and Ohio.

In 1930, George W. Jenkins opened the first Publix market in Winter Haven, Florida. In 1935, the market expanded to include a grocery store and renamed itself Publix Super Market. The first location outside of Florida was opened in Savannah, Georgia in 1945.
