In 1975, Asda Stores Limited was formed as a subsidiary of Associated Dairies and Farm Stores Limited, which had been acquired by the then-newly formed conglomerate, Central and Provincial Properties Limited. Asda took over the Yorkshire-based supermarket chain Queens. The original aim was to build a series of Supermarkets in the north of England to compete with the leading national chains.
In March 2014, the company announced it would be selling its Welsh stores to rival supermarket chain Morrisons. In April 2015, Asda announced it would be selling its Scottish stores to another rival supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s.
As of 2020, there are 566 Asda stores across the UK. In addition to its retail format, Asda also has a chain of hypermarkets called Asda Living.
