Does Safeway supermarket still exist?

Safeway was founded in 1915 in American Falls, Idaho, by Marion Barton Skaggs. Skaggs purchased his father’s five-and-dime store where he worked and combined it with 26 other small groceries he bought.

The resulting company, Skaggs United Stores, operated 31 stores in the Northwest.

In 1926, Skaggs United Stores became Safeway Inc. After World War II, Safeway expanded rapidly under Robert B.Handler, who became president and CEO in 1948. By the time Handler retired in 1964, Safeway operated 1,600 stores in 32 states.

In January 2015, Safeway announced it would be acquired by Albertsons in a deal valued at $9 billion. The merger was completed on January 30, 2015.

Today, Safeway operates as a banner of Albertsons Companies Inc., one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States with 2,300+ stores.

Conclusion: Safeway still exists today as a banner of Albertsons Companies Inc.
