Safeway is a grocery store chain that is headquartered in Pleasanton, California. The company operates stores in the United States and Canada under the Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, and Carrs banners.

Safeway also owns and operates GroceryWorks.com. As of May 2015, Safeway had 1,331 stores.

The Safeway brand entered the Washington market in 1993 with its purchase of the Seattle-based Carr’s chain of 23 Supermarkets. Carr’s had been founded in 1916.

In 1998, Safeway purchased the Yakima-based Yakima Fruit Market chain of 18 stores. In 2001, Safeway bought the Vancouver-based Thriftway chain of 27 stores from The Kroger Co.

Safeway’s Washington operations were headquartered in Bellevue until 2013 when the company moved its offices to Oakland, California. As of 2016, Safeway had 97 stores in Washington state.
