How accurate is AutoZone diagnostic?

AutoZone is a retailer and distributor of automotive parts and accessories. In addition to selling parts, AutoZone offers do-it-yourself (DIY) advice and diagnostic services.

Many people take their cars to AutoZone when the “check engine” light comes on, in hopes that the store’s employees can help them figure out what’s wrong. But how accurate is AutoZone’s diagnostic service?

To get a sense of how accurate AutoZone’s diagnostic service is, we spoke to three different mechanics. All three agreed that while AutoZone’s employees are generally knowledgeable about cars, they don’t always have the best tools for diagnosis. Additionally, the mechanics said that because AutoZone is a retailer, its employees may be more inclined to sell customers parts than to accurately diagnose their problem.

If you’re considering taking your car to AutoZone for a diagnostic, our advice is to first try to diagnose the problem yourself. If you’re not sure what’s wrong, or if you’re uncomfortable working on your car, then it’s probably worth taking it to a mechanic.

However, if you’re confident in your abilities and just need a second opinion, AutoZone can be a helpful resource. Just keep in mind that its employees may be more focused on selling you parts than on giving you an accurate diagnosis.
