Kohl’s is an American department store retail chain, operated by Kohl’s Corporation. As of February 2013, it is the largest department store chain in the United States with 1,155 stores in 49 states.
Kohl’s has its corporate headquarters in the Milwaukee suburb of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
Kohl’s was founded by Polish immigrant Maximilian Kohl in 1862. In 1927, the Kohl family sold the company to a group of investors led by Store Manager Charles Carens. Carens became the CEO and in 1937 he relocated the company headquarters to its current location in Menomonee Falls.
In 1946, the company was purchased by British-American Tobacco Company. Kohl’s operated as a subsidiary of BATUS Inc. until 1992, when BATUS Inc. spun off its United States operations to form a new company called BATUS Retail Group Inc. In 1994, A&P purchased Kohl’s 15% interest in the company.
Kohl’s opened its first store outside Wisconsin in Joliet, Illinois, in September 1975. The first Kohl’s store to open in a mall was located in Brookfield Square, also in Wisconsin.
Kohl’s currently operates 1,155 stores in 49 states. The state of Hawaii is the only state where Kohl’s does not have a presence.
